The news we all expected dropped just a couple of hours ago. Kliff is done at Texas Tech.
I think everyone hoped that he’d be able to right the ship this season, but closing out the year on a 5 game losing streak all but sealed his fate. We could point to many reasons that might take some blame away from Kliff, mainly injuries, but his record speaks for itself. 35-40 in 6 seasons just isn’t good enough.
I will always follows Kingsbury’s career closely, as I think he still has a bright future in the profession. I would be shocked if he doesn’t have multiple really good opportunities next season, possibly as an NFL or a high profile Power 5 OC.
As for the Red Raiders, they now shift their focus to a coaching search. It’s hard to know what to expect here, but some names have already been rumored… We have heard Dana Holgerson, Jim Leavitt (Oregon DC), Seth Litrell (UNT HC), Neal Brown (Troy HC), Matt Wells (Utah St HC), and Brent Venables (Clem DC). There have even been some rumors that, while seem very unlikely, are fun to think about… Names like former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach, and former OU coach Bob Stoops. We will let this play out a little bit before we go into analyzing potential hires. But needless to say, it’s going to be an eventful couple days for the Texas Tech program.
