Day 2 of the NCAA Tournament is in the books and the 12 seeds are here to stay! Honestly, at this point I think the 5 seed might be the worst spot to be in in the whole bracket. Lets get into a quick breakdown of each region.
Duke is the story of this region until they’re no longer in the Tournament, so we’ll start with them. They won, easily… Thats the whole story lets move on, Virginia Tech looked really good in their win over Saint Louis. That sets up a matchup with 12 seed Liberty (whom I picked to beat Miss State). Id expect VT to have a relatively easy time against Liberty. UCF beat VCU, setting up a very interesting matchup between Taco Fall and Zion Williamson. I don’t know if Zion will guard Fall, and I seriously doubt Fall would check Zion. But it will still be hella fun to see those too freaks on the court together.
Only two games on day 2 in the West region. Texas Tech handled Northern Kentucky fairly easily. The offense was pretty shaky in the first half with turnovers and lack of ball movement. But Jarrett Culver was the best player on the court as usual and Tech pulled away to an easy win in the 2nd half. Game two featured Buffalo bullying Arizona State. Nick Perkins was a force off the bench and will be a tough matchup for Texas Tech. That game is going to be an absolute war.
The South was busy yesterday and featured two pretty huge upsets. Oregon handled Wisconsin and UC Irvine beat 4 seed Kansas State in a shocker. But still the most shocking outcome to me was Oklahoma absolutely smashing Ole Miss. That sets up an intriguing matchup with Virginia, who ended up with a conformable win over 16 seed Gardener-Webb after a scary first half. Iowa “upset” Cincinnati and Tennessee took care of business. This bracket looks prime for a Virginia-Tennessee Elite 8, which would be really fun.
North Carolina, much like Virginia, had a shaky first half but pulled away comfortably from 16 seed Iona. They’ll face Washington on Sunday, who looked really good in their win over Utah State. Houston took care of Georgia State easily. They’ll face a tough Ohio State team that just barely hung on to upset 6 seed Iowa State (and screw up my bracket in the process!). Like the South, the Midwest looks to be on course for a heavyweight matchup in the Elite 8 between UNC and UK. Although the combination of PJ Washington likely being out, and Wofford looking REALLY impressive in their first round win could make that game interesting.
So that’ll do it for the first round of the NCA Tourney. We’ll do a full 2nd round wrap up blog in stead of the doing one for each day. So get a good breakfast and get ready to enjoy another great day of basketball. And if you only watch one game, make sure it’s Kentucky Vs Wofford.
